MS introduced WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) a long time ago. It's supposed to check to be sure that you have a valid copy of Windows installed. However, it's been known to make mistakes and disable software.
If you go through the normal Windows Update or Microsoft Update progress, WGA is installed for you. Here is an article by Susan Bradley on how to install all updates without the hassles treated by WGA. She''s probably the leading expert on patching, so this is "gold"...
