Be careful of Open Wi-Fi Networks

Apparently, there is a new attack tool called “Ippon”. It’s Japanese for “Game Over”. The technical nitty gritties are in the TechRepublic article (link below) by Michael Kassner.

Basically, what it does is look for internet traffic that is used to request updates. It intercepts them and spoofs a response that there is an update. If you accept it, the deed is done.

Right now, the prime attack vector is through open Wi-Fi  networks. So be careful updating your computer if you are in a public Wi-Fi hot spot… Only update your computer if you are:

  • Connected via an Ethernet cable
  • Using a protected/secure Wi-Fi connection
  • Connected via a VPN
