Windows 7 Release Date is Announced - 10/22/09

Looks like MS has finally announced the release date for Windows 7 (W7). It's not a shock to most of us. Folks in the know like Mary-Jo Foley have been predicting, for a while, a much earlier release than previously expected.

Looks like the code will be RTM (Released to Manufacturing) in the second half of July and on the shelves on October 22, 2009. Expect OEM machines available with it well in time for holiday sales.

There will be a Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program announced soon. This will let you buy a PC with Visa (or XP maybe?) and have the option to upgrade later to W7.

The "official" notice is available at:

I've been running the beta (and now the Release Candidate) for a couple of months and I'm cautiously optimistic about it's acceptance. It's definitely better than Vista. I call it "what Vista should have been".
